PLM Governance Benchmark - Details

Executive Overview

The PLM Governance Benchmark is global, and is open to companies based anywhere in the world.  It covers the whole scope of PLM, and will deliver a set of structured and quantified comparisons to show how PLM affects the business.

To achieve this, a proven and effective methodology is needed, and the Benchmark will use the current PLMIG tools:-

The Governance Benchmark structure is designed to be modular, and to deliver an increasing feed of information throughout the programme, culminating in a full set of metric and financial comparisons by the end of the year.

This structure allows a core group of companies to commence the Benchmark, and enables other companies to join seamlessly as the Benchmark progresses.

Every company that takes part in the Benchmark will follow the same modules.  This will help to ensure balanced results as well as equality of effort.  It also offers companies a number of different decision points about whether and how far to proceed.

Board-Level Involvement

A key to the success of the Governance Benchmark is the involvement of the Board, and senior management, in the reporting process as shown below.

Board Reporting
Joining the Benchmark

Every company that takes part in the Benchmark follows the same modules.  This ensures balanced results, and offers companies a number of decision points about how far to proceed.  Each module is designed to give its own value and be a stepping stone for the next.

The easy way to make use of the Governance Benchmark is to take part in the first two modules, which are a Coaching and Induction Workshop and a Level 0 Navigation Model.

Provides full insight into the Benchmark structure, plus training and the full set of working material for your PLM team to use internally or with other companies.

Positions your PLM implementation alongside other major user companies.  Assessment against the PLM Governance Standard highlights top-level areas of permeation and focus. Produces a written presentation of your implementation in a structured, neutral format that can be compared with the pool of other participants.

Entry Deliverables

Some of the best 'soundbites' for why a new approach is needed come from PLM managers in the USA:-

"We're going through the adoption curve, and we need to bring people around - it's holding us back from coming on line."

"We strive to be competitive, but we don't know how far up the page we are."

"We need a center point for people interested in PLM as a community - something that shows us what 'good' looks like."

Taking part in the 'Level 0' Benchmark enables you to break out of a vendor focus and gives a rapid exchange of expertise with other user companies.  It produces a written overview of your PLM impact in internationally-applicable format, providing visibility, confirmation and management collateral.

The Deliverable from the Benchmark entry is:-

  • A single, 20-page standard-format document
  • covering Drivers, Capabilities and Processes
  • supported by Mind Maps, Word Documents and Spreadsheets
  • distilled into a management presentation for the Board and PLM Steering Group
  • that can be compared with other companies' Level 0 results

This document, the PLM Navigation Model, becomes a central internal and external reference point to illustrate and coordinate PLM strategy and progress.  Not only does it give a clear picture of your own PLM situation, but it positions you accurately in relation to any other company you may wish to benchmark with in more detail.

Entry Costs

The Modules and Costs are the same for every participating company. If you join the Benchmark, you need to be confident that every other participant has gone through the same induction, understands the working methodology and uses it in the same way.  There needs to be equality of effort, and a balanced output of results.

The first Module is the Coaching and Induction Workshop, such as the one hosted by Thales on 16-17 April.  The Workshop gives a detailed insight into the Benchmark structure and methodology, and can also be used as a pure 'PLM Benchmarking' training session - there is no obligation to proceed further.  The cost of the Workshop is €3000 / $3900 per company, and includes the full set of Benchmarking tools.

The second Module is the Level 0 Analysis itself, which includes an assessment against the PLM Governance Standard and the creation of the Navigation Model expressed in terms of Drivers, Capabilities and Processes.  This requires approximately 4 days of input from the PLM Team over an elapsed time of 4 weeks.  It is conducted on site and the cost is €4500 / $5850.

Next Steps

This will be the most thorough and revealing evaluation of PLM that has ever been made, and companies from any country in the world are welcome to take part.  The Benchmark will run on both sides of the Atlantic, so it does not matter if your company is headquartered in the USA or Europe, and we will be glad to involve companies from Asia/Pacific or BRIC, for example.

The first step is therefore to request more information via the links below, either about the Entry Modules or the full Benchmark, which will run to structured metrics on the whole scope of PLM performance.
