PLM Research 2005

1. PLM Research 2005 : Proposals for EC FP6 Calls closing in September
After the Gothenburg and Brussels meetings described below, the PLMIG decided to respond to EC FP6 Calls closing in September 2005, that are of interest for PLM, with three proposals. These are a PLM-oriented SSA proposal in the context of the Manufuture Initiative, a Product Hunter STREP proposal, and a PDM & SCM STREP proposal. The latter two proposals address small, well-bounded elements or parts of PLM, whereas the first, a proposal in the context of the Manufuture Initiative, is more strategic.

Manufuture is a fore-runner for FP7, and will help to set the boundaries for the next Framework Programme. The European Commission uses platforms such as Manufuture to enable the research community to identify and communicate new areas and focal points for future research. It is through a project such as Manufuture that the PLMIG’s RSIG can establish PLM research as "Research into PLM" - that is, research into PLM itself and not merely into small elements of it - as a key research area for the future decades.

2. PLM Research 2005 : Follow-up Meeting
Location : Gothenburg, Sweden
Dates : 27 April 2005

The meeting took place on 27 April 2005 in Gothenburg. Its objectives included:
  • prepare proposals for EC FP6 Calls with closing dates in September 2005.
  • continue to work on the development of 2 PLM Research White Papers
  • define the next activities leading to the creation of a joint academia/industry PLM Research Forum.
The meeting was open to all members of the PLMIG.
Organisations wishing to participate, but not previously members of the PLMIG, participated by taking out Individual Membership of the PLMIG for 2005.

3. PLM Research 2005 : Kick-Off Meeting
Location : Brussels, Belgium
Dates : 2-3 February 2005

Further to the FP6 Calls for Proposals announced by the European Commission in December 2004, the Research SIG (RSIG) of the PLMIG organised a meeting to identify the best way to respond, and to initiate preparation of proposals.
The meeting was held on 2-3 February 2005 in Brussels. Attended by about 25 PLM research leaders, from all parts of Europe, it addressed :
  • PLM-related proposals for FP6 in 2005
  • PLM-related proposals to other funding sources, such as INTER-REG, in 2005
  • a PLM proposal to IMS
  • creation of a Steering Committee to drive PLM Research and proposals
The meeting was open to all members of the PLMIG.

Background
The PLMIG was set up as a result of the ICP-35K proposal to the EC's FP6 in 2003. That proposal was not accepted, but participants, convinced of the importance of PLM, set up the PLMIG as an ongoing entity that could help PLM advance and could play a role in assisting PLM research proposals.

The PLMIG started operations in January 2004. By the end of 2004 it had about 50 members, most of which had not participated in ICP-35K.

During 2004, a Research SIG was created within the PLMIG. It made two proposals for PLM research projects in 2004. Members of the PLMIG participate in national and international research projects (including FP6 and IMS).
