February Workshop in Boston, MA to launch PLM Benefits Reference Model Project

Oxford, England. January 25, 2006
The Product Lifecycle Management Interest Group (PLMIG) announced a PLM Benefits Workshop to be held 28 February - 1 March 2006 in Boston, MA.

The Workshop is the first in a series of international Workshops to be hosted by Founder Members of the PLM Benefits Reference Model (BRM) Project.

The objectives of the Workshop are:
  • to achieve an in-depth understanding of the current situation with PLM benefits. This situation is driving the need for a PLM Benefits Reference Model
  • to prepare the plan for the next steps of the project which will lead to an internationally accepted PLM Benefits Reference Model
The Workshop will enable participants to:
  • learn more about the PLM Benefits Reference Model Project
  • learn about the current situation of PLM benefits; understand the potential benefits of PLM; understand the reasons why identifying, quantifying and justifying PLM benefits can be so difficult
  • find out how other companies address the issues of PLM benefits
  • participate in the only industry-wide initiative addressing PLM benefits
  • make sure the Project is aware of their specific issues
Workshop Details
This Workshop will be held 28 February - 1 March 2006 in Boston, MA.

The PLM Benefits Reference Model Project
The objective of the PLM Benefits Reference Model project is to develop an industry-agreed, standard PLM Benefits Model to help everyone involved in PLM move forward faster. The Model will enable manufacturing companies to implement PLM faster, and will reduce sales cycles for vendors of PLM products and services.

It's generally recognized that this is a 'win-win' project that will help everyone involved in PLM - users, product vendors, service providers, academics, etc. People from all parts of the PLM World agree that the Model will save time when identifying the benefits in each new PLM situation, make it easier to communicate about PLM, and provide a rigorous basis for management decisions about PLM investments.

The project is complementary to the efforts of TC 184/SC4 (PLCS AP 239, etc.) which are focused on standardization in the area of technical data.

Founder Members of the PLM Benefits Reference Model Project
A Group of Founder Members, representing the different constituencies in the world of PLM, is being assembled to drive forward this international, collaborative project.

Founder Members of the BRM project include PTC (www.ptc.com) and UGS (www.ugs.com). In the Launch Phase of the project, the PLMIG is jointly organizing a series of 2-day workshops with the Founder Members:
  • to enable discussion of the need for the PLM Benefits Reference Model with a broad range of other organizations
  • to discuss the current situation of PLM benefits
  • to discuss experience with PLM benefits
  • to prepare the next steps of the BRM project
In addition to the Workshop in Boston, Workshops are being planned for Europe and Asia.
