PLM Self-Assessment Toolkit Published

Oxford, England. September 05, 2006
The Product Lifecycle Management Interest Group (PLMIG) has published the first standard, openly-available PLM Self-Assessment Toolkit, enabling new and experienced PLM practitioners to generate their own company-wide and agreed view of their current and future PLM situation.

Self-Assessment Methodology
The Self-Assessment methodology is based on a 'Lite' (or trimmed-down) version of the successful PLM Benchmarking Handbook, which has been in use since 2004 to compare PLM implementations in detail. It therefore works for all sizes of company, in all industries, and is the fastest way to generate a complete picture of a PLM enterprise.

The Toolkit is designed to be used without the help of external advisors, not because external advisors are bad but because that would not produce the same results. The Toolkit provides all of the instructions and checklists that are needed.

Self-Assessment Benefits
For new adopters of PLM, the Toolkit will show their company's preparedness and the specific information that they will need to continue. New users are typically overwhelmed by the mass of general information they are given, and need to know what part of it applies to their own organisation. Use of the Self-Assessment methodology allows them to discover their product landscape, their organisational barriers, their progress with collaborative product development, and the PDM and PLM progress that they may already have made.

For experienced companies, particularly multinationals, there will be masses of PLM project history, technical detail and consultancy reports. Their problem is therefore to to give this a meaningful and standardised structure. The Toolkit generates a peer-reviewed definition of current progress and a roadmap for the immediate next steps.

Toolkit Availability
The PLM Self-Assessment Toolkit is provided free to PLMIG members or can be purchased as a stand-alone item. Once purchased, the Toolkit may be reformatted, enhanced, re-badged with company livery, or subsumed into other company material according to the Terms and Conditions.

This flexibility allows users to take ownership of the methodology, and to apply it in the way that is most effective for them. It will also lead to practical improvements that will eventually be incorporated in an updated version.
