The Aim of the PLM Market Initiative
is to make a transformational improvement to the way that the marketplace adopts PLM,
by bringing together leading organisations of all types in a formalised and effective framework.
It will work in synergy with the User Initiative
but will be much wider in scope. Its drivers are to create for the first time:-
- agreed standards for PLM
- industry-standard approaches to major PLM issues
- a consistent articulation of what PLM is, and can do
Scope
This cannot be achieved without a powerful and coordinated initiative involving many people from many countries. The
technical challenges alone are immense. Before standards can be agreed they must be defined, and this in a subject where
the definition of "PLM" itself still causes problems. Standard approaches to issues such as 'Configuration Management' or
'Management of PLM across multiple cultures and sites' will need the combined input of many PLM experts.
There is also the challenge of gaining agreement and acceptance. There are so many existing positions
on these subjects that consensus will require considerable commitment.
However, it can be done if the involvement is wide enough. The prize is that the results can be mapped into market
regions across the globe, and everybody who is active in PLM wants an improvement on where we are now. This is why the
PLMIG, as an independent and neutral industry body, proposes to lead this multi-country initiative.
Format
Stage 1
Participants work internally with the PLMIG to review the market constraints, the current neutral and proprietary PLM
information, add to the market profile of the Initiative and generate their approach to each of the theme areas.
The results of each contribution are combined into the common set of working material and reviewed by all participants as
Stage 1 evolves.
Stage 2
PLMIG and participants implement the dissemination framework agreed from Stage 1. Stage 2 will include active dissemination
and case study generation in cooperation with universities, trade associations, user groups and industry bodies. It may
include specific workshops and roadshows to develop theme ideas and industry features. It will
also leverage the development of the PLM Reference Models.
The roll-out of Stage 2 will be via a formal programme which will measure the positive impact on the PLM marketplace as its
primary deliverable.
