Open Body of Knowledge A vast amount of PLM knowledge has been generated since the birth of PLM, and many organisations have developed methodologies and tools based on the experience they have gained. These are the product of many man years of work, which should not be wasted. The PLM Interest Group does not aim to recreate or supersede any of this existing knowledge, but simply addresses its main weakness as seen by its potential users: because the methodologies and tools are proprietary to the vendor or consultancy that created them, there is no way of understanding how they fit into the whole picture. The PLMIG develops its own central body of knowledge via its workshop techniques, technical frameworks and project synergy. This is always structured to allow proprietary methodologies to be interfaced with it and run in parallel. This allows existing commercial tools to be used in an open context. The development of the PLMIG body of knowledge does not exactly mirror the 'Open Source' software model, but it has many similarities. Charges for PLMIG tools and publications relate to their creation, and not to their ongoing use. There are no charges relating to the scale or geographical distribution of their use. Owners of PLMIG PLM tools are encouraged to edit and adapt them to suit their own needs, and can include part or the whole of them in their own PLM material. By following this policy the PLMIG aims to put as much useful PLM knowledge as possible into the public domain. Copyright 2010. PLM Interest Group | |
