PLMIG announces User Demand for Industry-Wide PLM Initiative

Oxford, England. December 08, 2008
The Product Lifecycle Management Interest Group (PLMIG) announced that as a result of the PLM User Forum launch in Reading, UK and Cleveland, OH during November, demand has crystallised for a user-driven, vendor-supported initiative to develop the PLM industry in 2009.

The user viewpoint is the same on both sides of the Atlantic: there needs to be a clear and accepted method for demonstrating the commercial impact of PLM on a business; there is a demand for coordinated industry support to standardise the building blocks of PLM; and there is a desire for proactive support from the vendor community aimed at implementation within large corporations.

Discussions with vendors themselves have shown general support for an initiative that can build on collaboration to develop the industry, and their feedback is currently at a first draft proposal. The program includes:-
  • collaboration between user companies on ongoing implementation issues
  • vendor-hosted workshops on business and technical themes
  • a continuation of the user-only Forum series
  • briefing visits to users in the USA and Europe
  • coordination via a high-level steering group
The aim is to launch a genuinely collaborative initiative that will enable users, vendors, systems integrators and consultancies to improve the adoption of PLM across the global marketplace. It is expected that research spin-offs will also be possible. Discussions are continuing in order to formalise the program by the end of the year.

The PLM Interest Group
The PLM Interest Group is a global Group which brings together its members to work proactively to solve their PLM problems. It has previously run workshops that have produced the PLM Benchmarking Handbook; the PLM-SCM Guidebook; and the PLM Maturity Reference Manual.
