PLMIG proposes PDM Managers' Meeting - and calls for input to Wish List Oxford, England. September 22, 2009 Because there is no agreed body of knowledge about PDM, companies around the world spend millions of dollars re-inventing what has already been learned. The challenge is to focus attention back onto PDM, and to do something about formalising the vast amount of technical expertise that PDM specialists have gained. There needs to be some way for PDM managers to share their detailed knowledge with each other, and save the overhead of everyone having to develop their implementations from first principles. One way forward would be to hold a PDM Manager's Meeting, so that the people who really know about PDM can work together constructively. There is no point in having a "talking shop" - the meeting would need to have a structured format so that the time is used constructively, and an agenda that leads to new deliverable material that the participants can take back with them. The PLMIG aims to host one or more such meetings, probably launching in Europe with a follow-on event in the USA. The results of the meetings will be linked, so that they build on each other, and the agenda of the meetings will be set by discussion with PDM Managers themselves. The discussion period has already started and will run for the next 3-4 weeks. PDM Managers are invited to read the background at the PLMIG web site and to send their views via pdm_formalisation@plmig.com. The PLM Interest Group The PLM Interest Group is a global Group which brings together its members to work proactively to solve their PLM problems. It has previously run workshops that have produced the PLM Benchmarking Handbook; the PLM-SCM Guidebook; and the PLM Maturity Reference Manual.
