        PLM Standardisation
             UK Workshop

Overview

The fourth workshop in the PLM Standardisation series was held in London on 01-02 December 2011, hosted by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The Agenda built on the results of the workshops in the Nordic, German and Italian regions including the PLM Best Practice Library; the Path to PLM; and the new implementation methodology for SMEs.  It also included a debate about how the IMechE and other professional bodies can best support their members on the road to PLM adoption.

UK

Workshop Format

On Day 1 the PLMIG presented the current scenario, together with the Gothenburg, Munich and Milan results.   Discussions continued around the approach that the IMechE does have, and could have, to PLM.  These developed naturally to cover the priorities for PLM standardisation, and how standards can assist awareness and adoption of PLM, internally and across industry at large.

Day 2 began with a thorough work-through of PLM Governance and Management, based around the constraints and requirements of very large companies where the board is disconnected from everyday management and operations.  The morning discussions then moved to the Value Chain and SMEs, to examine how this best-practice governance can work down to companies of SME size.  The afternoon session was a thorough work-through of the Product Structure Standard, and new issues were highlighted relating to the way that the automotive industry sells and delivers its products.

Workshop Results

The immediate result of the Workshop was to complete the raw material for the PLM Governance Standard.  This was published two weeks later as the Q4 2011 PLM Journal.

Next Steps

The PLMIG initiative continues, with discussions to determine how the formal PLM standards should be established and governed, and plans to extend the series of Workshops into new countries such as the UK and the USA.

The next PLMIG event is the PLM Standards Implementation Workshop in Munich, which will show how to apply the new standards in real working environments.
